Bearings are used in nearly every moving mechanism—from the engine and chassis to doors and sunroofs. Many car owners and technicians only know that a faulty bearing causes noise, but do not fully understand the different types and their specific roles. By installation position and function, automotive bearings fall into four groups: chassis bearings, transmission system bearings, engine accessory bearings, and body auxiliary bearings.

The chassis system uses the largest number of bearings and operates under the harshest conditions. The key component is the wheel hub bearing, which supports the vehicle’s weight while enabling smooth wheel rotation, directly affecting driving safety and steering stability. Other chassis bearings include steering system bearings and suspension joint bearings, which ensure smooth steering and absorb road vibration for better handling.

The transmission system consists of gearbox bearings, differential bearings and drive shaft bearings. These bearings endure high-speed rotation and alternating loads; wear or fatigue can lead to gearbox hesitation, transmission noise and poor power delivery.

Engine peripherals mainly use tensioner bearings, idler bearings and water pump bearings. These bearings run continuously at high engine speeds, requiring exceptional heat resistance, high-speed performance and sealing—making them common wear parts.

Body components include door hinge bearings, sunroof guide bearings and seat adjustment bearings. Though not critical to driving safety, they directly impact user experience.
